This review is from: Evolution Of A Psychiatrist: Against the Odds (Paperback)

This book was extremely well written in that it allowed the reader to become a part of the story. It was genuine in its plot and subject matter, effectively illustrating transformation of its subject from a fearful child to a creative and determined to succeed young man. The author did a phenomenal job illustrating even the most subtle character traits in a manner that the reader could laugh with the main character and not so much at him.

Perseverance and chameleon-like adaptability seemed to always triumph at times when suspense or saddening events peaked. The book remained true to its ethnic roots yet the main character can be idenified with by any race or age group. This story did a great service in the name of race relations and bringing more clarity to the real issues that remained relevent in the post civil rights era for aspiring young blacks.

The human side of the doctor is revealed in this story in a way that is rarely seen in contemporary literature. There was a succinct yet accurate and understandable introduction to how a psychiatrist really operates, contrary to popular myth. This book should be required reading for all medical students and mental healthcare professionals. It is also quite appropriate for the inquisitive lay person. I thorougly enjoyed every page, and highly recommend the book as a must read.

This review is from: Buster B. Basset Hound, the Label Buster Labeled as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Dog) by the Sneaky Label Maker, Buster Proves the Label WRONG and Turns into a Superhero, the Label Buster! (Paperback)

This is a wonderfully written interactive book for all kids -- and adults too! Although the theme about the damage caused by labeling kids is geared toward ADHD, the book and its theme apply to all forms of "labeling" and "name-calling." The story about Buster and his friend Jason is fun and engaging and flows beautifully with the theme. The interactive aspects, including the music CD, made the book a hit with my 9-year old nephew.

This book is both serious and fun and will engage and benefit any kid who reads it -- as well as adults who read it with them!

This is an excellent book. I have an extensive background in meditation and children and can honestly say Dana offers an appropriate approach to meditation for children. Her insightful method of combining breathing with math memorization coupled with progressive relaxation and white light meditation is superb. I highly recommend this book.
Sarah Wood Vallely Author of "Sensational Meditation for Children"

This review is from: ADHD: Deceptive Diagnosis (Paperback)

I am a licensed therapist in practice for 18 years and I have been a Christian for 32 years. I believe with all my heart that God led me into this ministry. I have worked with a number of children and adults over the years that have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. It is true, some of these ADD/ADHD behaviors are simply about lack of discipline. However, many of them are undoubtedly attributed to problems with biology/physiology, as evidenced by the fact that when the diet and health habits change, so does behavior! Please note that some of the newer neuroimaging tools (SPECT scans and Qualitative EEG) allow us to see that the brain mappings and brainwave patterns of an ADD/ADHD person are definitely different than a person who does not have this same behavioral disorder. Some, doctors are saying that these tests offer proof of diagnosis, others disagree. Either way, it is most definitely a significant finding and one that should not be overlooked when discussing this particular diagnosis! In my opinion, making a blanket statement that suggests that ADD/ADHD is sinful behavior is unconscionable and irresponsible. Stating that ADD/ADHD is born out of sin is like saying that major physical diseases, like multiple sclerosis or cancers, are caused by sin! How much better off would we all be if we helped those who struggle with deficit areas of behavior (like encouraging stronger parenting skills and appropriate behavior in children) than to simply "throw stones" by calling certain disorders manifestations of sin. I am not trying to absolve people of personal responsibility and obedience to God and His word, I am simply stating that it seems that we do more harm than good by indicting someone with the label of sinner than by looking at the possibility that there are bona fide disorders, both physical and mental that have more to do with being in a human body than with being a sinner. It's cruel to saddle someone who cannot help a physiological condition with the label of sinner. The term "sinner" implies that the person only need turn from their sinful ways, repent and change their behaviors to affect sustaining change. If this were true, than people with ADD/ADHD would be able to simply change their "sinful behaviors and attitudes" and their condition would be healed. This is simply NOT realistic. Might it help? Sure, some of the hallmark modes of successfully treating ADD/ADHD is to help children identify behaviors that are hindering them and to change them, help parents learn more effective parenting strategies and behavioral reinforcements. However, those treatment interventions at times only serve to help the person better function in their environment, it does not wipe out all existence of the disorder. Those in the mental health community are not looking to the ADD/ADHD diagnosis as a label to "excuse" behavior as the authors suggest, but rather look to the series of diagnostic behaviors as a way of better understanding overall behavior. When we better understand the behaviors we can then make positive movement toward treating the condition and helping the person to gain better self-control over their own life, character, and personality. I could be wrong here, but it seems to me that this is a more productive use of my God-given talents: to help someone isolate an issue and then to help them overcome that issue. If I may be so bold, I would encourage the authors of this book to handle the topic of mental health issues with a bit more compassion and understanding than has been demonstrated in their writings. After all, isn't that the model of behavior toward one another that Jesus gave us?

This book deals with the deceptive ADHD diagnosis. It offers parents and others dealing with these children true hope through biblical counseling. It reveals the roots of the ADHD behaviors and the alternative to medication. A must read.

As grandparents that did not know the first thing about ADD, this book has helped us to understand our Grandson and also helped us to understand what our daughter as a single parent has been going through for the last 5 years. The chapter on what the School Systems SHOULD do was very inlightning. We now have a guide to use in talking to Doctors,Teachers and other family members.

Thank you! I have worked with a lot of children, and this has opened my eyes a bit. Now I will try and dig deeper to see why a child is acting the way they are.
