They have ADD/ADHD: So Why Am I the One Taking Pills?

What if your family life was like a circus all the time? It’s not obvious at first, but slowly, you realize all the dreams and visions you had of getting married and having a family are not turning out as you envisioned, sort of like when you promise to bake a cake for a special occasion. You carefully prepare it, making sure all the right ingredients are added, mixing and beating and fluffing about, but despite all your efforts, it comes out of the oven flat as a tack. Only in this case, it’s your husband and your kids, and NOT the cake that is just not quite right, despite your efforts! You ask yourself, WHAT DID I DO WRONG? The problem is nobody can tell you. Not really, not them, not the professionals, and in th

The Thinking about YOU Thinking about ME book explores the critical nature of perspective taking (Theory of Mind) in our day-to-day interactions and its importance in the classroom setting. It describes how the perspective taking process works and offers a myriad of therapeutic activities for teachers/therapists to utilize with children and adults. Michelle Garcia Winner explains how professionals can use informal measures (since no standardized measures are available) to assess the abstract skill and to determine which students will benefit from this type of treatment. Is The Only Way To Be Diagnosed With Adhd By Taking The Expensive Lengthy Assessment Test?

The official ADHD assessment diagnosis would cost $1200. My insurance (provided by my current university, UCSD) would not cover any of it. What I’d really like to do is be prescribed with medication.
I was told by friends that they were perscribed medication (such as Adderall) just by seeing a psychiatrist, who would then send them home with a test. After they turn in the test and asking a few questions, they walked out the door with a prescription. I like this method better because my insurance would actually cover the therapy sessions.
What would you recommend I do? Most importantly, how did you get diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed medication?

Taking Charge of ADHD: The Complete, Authoritative Guide for Parents (Revised Edition)

From Scientific American
Although the book is targeted at the parents of ADHD children, it will serve as a useful resource for teachers and others involved in the care and education of these children….This book is unique in its up-to-date and clear presentation of the scientific underpinnings of the disorder and the pragmatic, empirically based approach to intervention that it encourages. It is also very well organized and readable; it is probably the best available resource of this type.
